FAMILY SEPARATION CAUSED BY IMMIGRANT DETENTION
“More than 100,000 children have been separated from their parents during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, and three-quarters of these children…are likely US citizens.” Parents, who often hold demanding and low-paying jobs, are placed in detention by the Dept. of Homeland Security and the children are left with family members, friends, or other community members in a haphazard fashion. Some of the caregivers have uncertain immigration status themselves and have other family members to care for, so that the children they take on may be a burden. Some detained parents have not seen their children for many months.
One wonders what this kind of senseless cruelty achieves except for human misery. For Trump supporters, family separation is the price that people may have to pay for undocumented immigration. It is a huge and hateful price, and we should all be ashamed of it.
