CLIMATE GOALS POSTPONED
The New England states and New York have been leaders in attempting to cut emissions in motor transport and home heating and for production of electricity. They have been advocates for electric automobiles and heat pumps and for wind and solar power and importation of hydro- power from Canada. But the Trump administration has upended their plans.
Trump has a special dislike for offshore windfarms and has halted their expansion in some areas. Federal tax breaks for solar panels and electric vehicles have been ended. Now Northeastern states are rethinking their opposition to nuclear power and natural gas pipelines.
Residential electricity rates in the Northeast are twice as high as those in the Midwest and South. And during this last tough winter, there wasn’t enough natural gas available, so power plants had to burn highly polluting oil. Affordability concerns have caused politicians to postpone their clean energy goals.
