AI and WORKER DISPLACEMENT
AI (Artificial Intelligence) is going to be displacing workers. Examples include drivers, call center workers, warehouse workers and software engineers. Automated systems already operate jitney services (Waymo) and replace workers in call centers (for example in the Philippines, where 7-10% of the GDP is attributed to call centers). Workers in affected industries will have to be retrained to have employment.
Unfortunately, large numbers of workers lack either the skills or the desire to work in the jobs that will be available. The jobs that will be requiring workers are in teaching, construction, skilled trades like electrician work and plumbing, hospitality and elder care. Anti-immigrant bias will not help recruitment in some of these fields.
