SUPPRESSION OF INFORMATION AND ATTACKS ON THE MEDIA
For some time Pres. Trump has gone after his “enemies” in the media and after other purveyors of information. The “enemies” include talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, the New York Times, and a reporter from the Associated Press who refused to call the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America”.
Trump has also limited information that he considers unfavorable and persecuted purveyors of this information: he has limited press coverage of the Pentagon and defense issues; penalized universities that advocate diversity and barred foreign visitors with “disfavored opinions”, for example about Gaza; removed books about “sensitive subjects” from military academy libraries; scrubbed information about climate change from government websites; removed information on slavery from National Parks
and Historic Sites; interfered with the US Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics to produce less unfavorable statistics about the US population and economy.
Other presidents have clamped down on critics and information, but usually in wartime or other occasions of national emergency. Trump’s actions are clear violations of the
First Amendment and/or the public’s right to know.
