STARVATION IN GAZA
First there was the two-month Israeli blockade of aid to Gaza. Then in late May Israel inaugurated a new aid system bypassing the relatively efficient UN system which Israel accused of infiltration by Hamas. Now aid is being distributed through an organization called the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, with heavy support from US evangelicals and with security provided by US contractors and Israeli soldiers. Supplies of food are severely limited and distribution is chaotic.
Through the 20 months of war in Gaza 17,000 children have been killed and 34,000 children have been wounded. Now 71,000 children and 17,000 mothers are facing acute malnutrition. Gaza families cannot wait: the competition for food is fearful. Violence has broken out at distribution sites.
The US is heavily implicated in all of this. Aid to Gaza must be increased and returned to UN management. The 2.1 million people of Gaza must be saved.Â
